Varicose veins and their smaller counterparts, spider veins, are not merely cosmetic or genetically predetermined anatomical defects; Ray Peat framed them as a dynamic, hormonally-driven condition reflecting a systemic loss of vascular tone and tissue integrity. Peat noted that an excess of estrogen is associated with varicose veins in both men and women, and that the condition slightly increases the risk of clots.

Restoring vascular integrity requires a multi-pronged approach centered on opposing estrogen and supporting energy metabolism. Peat observed that a large dose of progesterone could normalize bulging veins within an hour, and he recommended it along with vitamin K as superior topical agents for restoring the ability of venous smooth muscle to contract. He also emphasized the importance of thyroid hormone, vitamin A, and cholesterol for producing protective steroids like pregnenolone and DHEA, which have a natural, mild digitalis-like action that strengthens the heartbeat and vascular tone. Dietary interventions include consuming adequate high-quality protein, lots of carbohydrates from sources like fruit and potatoes, and maintaining a favorable ratio of calcium to phosphate to help stabilize the hormones that regulate blood vessels. Vitamins E and aspirin can help address the localized inflammation often present around the affected veins.

Additional supportive measures target the broader physiological context. Peat pointed out that fibrous foods like raw carrots, cooked mushrooms, and bamboo shoots can sometimes correct the problem, likely by reducing the endotoxin and estrogen load from the intestine, and that thyroid hormone is crucial for maintaining the function of both the colon and the veins. He also cautioned that anything with a detectable smell, such as chemical residues from cigarette smoke, could have biological activity that contributes to the condition.
